Borra Caves

Borra Caves are sited on the Eastern Ghats in the Ananthagiri Hills close to Vishakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, India. These caves lying at an elevation of about 800-1300 meters above the sea level are popular all over the country for containing prehistoric rock formation of stalagmite and stalactite. Explored in 1807 by the British geologist William King George, the Borra Caves in Ananthagiri Hills are located in the Borra village.

The Borra Caves are located in the Anatagiri Hills of Eastern Ghats, near Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh in India. They are at a height of about 800 to 1300 meters above Mean Sea Level and are famous for millions of years old stalactite and stalagmite formations.

They were discovered by William King George, a British geologist in the year 1807. The Borra Guhalu Railway Station is placed along the Kothavalasa-Kirandul railway of the East Coast Railway, a part of the Indian Railways. The journey on train to this station for passengers heading for the Borra Caves from Vishakhapatnam takes only 4 hours up a sharp twisting ghat road. The Gosthani River originating over the rock formations is named Gosthani because of its similarity with the udder of a cow. The Borra Caves derived the name from a rock formation having resemblance with the human brain which is called borra in the local Telugu language. The region surrounding the Borra Caves is uncultivated and rocky with mica found all over the neighboring area of the caves. An interesting story lies behind the discovery of the Borra Caves according to which cow, pasturing above the caves, fell down through an opening on the roof of the caves 60 meters below, and the cowherd eventually discovered the caves while looking for the cow. This popular site in India is also famous for containing a stalagmite formation resembling a Shiva Lingam.
