The India Gate reaching up to a height of 42 meters stands in the heart of the city. Appearing as archway like “Arc-de-Triomphe” this historic monument in New Delhi bears resemblance with the famous war memorial in France. Paying tribute to 70, 000 Indian soldiers who were martyred in the First World War, the India Gate contains names of over 13,516 Indian and British soldiers who died in 1919’s Afghan War at the Northwestern Frontier.
In 1921 the Duke of Connaught, His Royal Highness laid the foundation stone of the India Gate, its designer being Edwin Lutyens.

The India Gate was dedicated to the country by Viceroy Lord Irwin after ten years of its construction. Much after the independence of India, another commemorative of Amar Jawan Jyoti was included at the site of the India Gate. The Amar Jawan Jyoti is present at this location as a flame burning all day and night in remembrance of the Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives in 1971’s historic Indo-Pakistan War.
The arc of the India Gate rests on a low platform of red stone and ascends in levels to a massive form which has on its bottom the inscription ‘Imperial sons’. On the top on its two sides it bears the inscription ‘INDIA’ edged by MCM and in the right it bears the inscription ‘XIX’. The domed bowl above was supposed to be containing burning oil which is seldom done. This famous site in Delhi is enclosed by luxuriant green lawns, a popular hangout and picnic spot for the tourists and citizens in Delhi which is crowded with people on the wintry days and summer evenings.
