Meenakshi Temple

The Tamil Nadu, a state situated at the tip of India offers a host of sightseeing options and it could be said in this respect that at this state a visit to the Meenakshi Temple situated in Madurai (one of the most poplar cities of Tamil Nadu) should be the top most priority of the visitors.

It is believed that this temple was initially built by the Kulasekara Pandya but it is the Nayaks, who are credited as far as the splendid architecture is concerned.

The Meenakshi Temple, which is regarded to be the best example as far as the Dravidian architecture is concerned is actually a complex of temples and it is important to note here that the south gateway temple is adorned with twin temples that is the temple of Shiva and the temple of Meenakshi.

The Meenakshi Temple, which is also referred to as the Meenakshi Sundareshwar Temple is dedicated to Meenakshi (incarnation of Parvati) and Lord Shiva. It covers an area of six hectares and features gopurams that boasts of a great architecture. At this temple, you cannot just take your eyes off the towers that have been graced with the carvings of the goddesses, gods, mythological figures and you would also find depictions that are very closely associated with the fables. It would not be not wrong to say that the striking feature of this temple is the gopuram that adorns the south of the temple as this gopuram is graced with 500 sculptures.

The most important ritual that is associated with this temple is the marriage of Meenakshi with Lord Shiva, who is also referred to as Lord Sundareshwar. This festival gets started off on the second day of the lunar month and gets continued for twelve days at a stretch.
