Princep Ghat

The winding Hooghly River which journeys across the heart of the ‘City of Joy’ or Kolkata, is lined beautifully with ghats or embankments at a number of convenient locations along the course of the river in Kolkata. The Princep Ghat is one of these popular ghats located along the bank of the Hooghly River.

The Princep Ghat in Kolkata was constructed in 1843 as a tribute to James Princep, a notable researcher who served the Asiatic Society (1832- 1838) as its secretary. James Princep is remembered particularly for being the person to decipher the Brahminical script of Emperor Akbar.

A major part of the research works of James Princep being carried out in Kolkata, made James Princep popular among the people of Kolkata. The Princep Ghat at Kolkata was opened for the public in 1843 and for the next few years the ghat was used by the regal British retinues who used the jetty at the ghat for embarkment and debarkation.

During the British rule in Kolkata, the city was replete with majestic buildings and properly planned roads. Kolkata, along with these features, was decided to be beautified more with along the riverside by the British administrative heads. They thus accordingly marked some locations along the banks of the Hooghly River offering panoramic views, and constructed ghats with stairways leading to the water.

The Princep Ghat, one of these beautiful ghats, was also built along the riverside. At present, this ghat is used for bathing, ritualistic purposes and recreational activities. From the Princep Ghat the tourists and visitors can enjoy hours of leisure sitting with their family and friends family and watch the moving liners and boats. From the Princep Ghat they can also get on a country boat and enjoy an exclusive boat ride across the Hooghly River.
