Victoria Memorial

The Victoria Memorial situated in Kolkata is a stunning monumental building constructed to honor Queen Victoria, the famous Empress of India. The Victoria Memorial happens to be one of the most popular tourist spots in Kolkata, its site being visited by hundreds of tourists and visitors every day. The beautiful gardens surrounding Victoria Memorial in Kolkata are some of the most-visited places for recreation in the city with the in-house museum being a prime factor in attracting visitors from different locations in the city as well as different parts of the country.

After the demise of Queen Victoria in the month of January in 1901, the then Viceroy of India, Lord Curzon put forward the proposal of constructing an impressive memorial for immortalizing the glory of Queen Victoria. His suggestion was to build a spacious and majestic monumental building enclosed by a charmingly laid out garden. According to Lord Curzon this imposing building should be a historic museum displaying statues and pictures of renowned persons who contributed immensely in the development of the country. His appeal for money was granted by the citizens and princes of India and the total amount of money (Rs 1, 05, 00, 000) estimated for the construction of Victoria Memorial was presented from the voluntary contributions made by these people.

Sir William Emerson who was the President of the renowned British Institute of Architects, made the plan of the Victoria Memorial, the constructional work being managed by Messrs. Martin & Co. of Calcutta with Vincent J. Esch working as the chief architect. On the 4th of January in 1906, the then Prince of Wales King George V founded the Victoria Memorial, this building being opened officially in 1921. The Victoria Memorial, sited on a vast expanse of 64 acres enclosed by creatively landscaped gardens, covers an area of about 338 ft X 228 ft. 184 feet in height from the base to the top of the 16 feet high figure of Victory, the Victoria Memorial at Kolkata contains several exquisite figures representing Prudence, Learning and Motherhood. Encircling the main dome, the building includes the figures of Charity, Justice, Art and Architecture.
